Winds, Brass, and percussion program
Overview
Our Winds, Brass, and Percussion Program offers students of intermediate/advanced levels the opportunity to improve their musical skills and technique while having fun and making new friends. Led by experienced and dedicated faculty, students will receive daily instrument workshops and be placed in either Wind Ensemble or Symphony Orchestra. Saxophone and euphonium students will be placed in the Wind Ensemble.
Large ensemble placement will be determined by video submission. At the end of the week, students will showcase their hard work and newly acquired skills in a final concert for family and friends. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to take your music to the next level and have a summer to remember!

Sign up for our Jazz Intensive! Students placed into Jazz 1 can fully participate in both programs almost every day. On Sunday morning, you will follow the Jazz track, on Sunday afternoon you will follow the WBP track. You get the best of both worlds!
Enhance your summer music experience with ʻUkulele Workshop!
Our ‘Ukulele Workshop meets Monday-Friday from 1:30:300PM. That leaves a nice 15-minute break before your Wind, Brass, and Percussion programming begins at 3:15!
Eligibility Requirements
- Eligible instruments include flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinets, saxophones, horn, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba, and percussion.
- Students entering 8th grade up until 1st year college. 19 and under.
- Ideal candidates have at least 2 years of experience on their instrument.
- Students CAN sign up for both Jazz 1 (intermediate/advanced) and the Winds, Brass, and Percussion Program
- Students CANNOT sign up for both Jazz 2 (beginning/intermediate) and the Winds, Brass, and Percussion Program
- Oboe students must acquire a specific set of supplies to participate in the process of crafting their own reeds. On the registration form, oboe students have the option to purchase the consumable supplies (cane, staples) and share equipment at a subsidized price of $50. Alternatively, students can opt to purchase their own supplies from this list.
2026 Faculty
PMI 2026 Wind Ensemble Conductor Christopher Smith is the band director at Kapolei Middle School, where he has taught for nine years. At Kapolei Middle, Mr. Smith frequently serves as a mentor teacher to University of Hawaiʻi teacher candidates and most recently established a partnership with Chamber Music Hawaiʻi, bringing performances and masterclass opportunities to Kapolei students. He additionally conducts adult and student ensembles throughout Oʻahu, and has appeared with the Hawaiʻi Symphonic Band, U.S. Pacific Fleet Band, Honolulu Wind Ensemble, University of Hawaiʻi West Oʻahu Band, University of Hawaiʻi Summer Band, and the OBDA Honor Bands. He is regularly sought out as a guest clinician for local middle and high schools. Mr. Smith is a graduate of the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, where he earned his Bachelor of Music and Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Secondary Education. While at UH Mānoa, he toured with the UH Wind Ensemble, performed as winner of the Concerto Competition with the UH Symphony Orchestra, and studied conducting with Dr. Jeffrey Boeckman. He previously completed coursework at the University of Texas at Austin, where he performed with the UT Wind Ensemble under the direction of Jerry Junkin. Mr. Smith is a member of the Oʻahu Band Directors Association.
Dr. Kim Barclift is Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, where she leads the instrumental music education program and teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in music education. A National Board Certified Teacher, she brings over 20 years of experience teaching middle and high school band and has served as Assistant Director of Bands at Elon University. Dr. Barclift is an active guest clinician and adjudicator and regularly works with middle school and high school ensembles. Her research focuses on effective music teaching, teacher reflection, and music teacher preparation. She holds degrees from East Carolina University, Boston University, and the University of North Carolina Greensboro.

After registering, you will receive a placement video submission link. The purpose of the placement video is to help us determine which ensemble is the best fit for you. When recording, please make sure your face and instrument are clearly visible. High quality audio/video is not necessary. While this is NOT an audition, students may not be accepted if they don’t meet the general performance expectations.
