Here in Hawaii, we love the cool ocean breeze that, combined with our islands’ sunny weather, creates the perfect environment for surfing, beaching, hiking, and of course, practicing music!
This summer the tropical trade winds we’re focused on are students like you! Do you play a wind, brass, or percussion instrument? Imagine a summer in Hawaii spent improving your musicianship…paradise!
Master Your Instrument
Our Wind, Brass, and Percussion Clinics are for students with at least 2 years of experience on their instrument. You’ll have the opportunity to learn advanced techniques from an instructor who specializes in your instrument. After being immersed in music & Oahu’s summer sun, you’ll have tons of new skills to show off, plus countless memories!
Our flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, saxophone, french horn, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba, and percussion instructors are all successful musicians with a passion for teaching. They’re looking forward to meeting this year’s cohort of music-loving students!
Classes will be held at the spacious Hawaii Convention Center, where ensembles will be kept small and chairs will be distanced. While we will not be offering student housing this year, we still encourage all interested students to attend! If you’re traveling from outside the island of Oahu, we have an exclusive booking rate available at the Alohilani Resort!
Can’t make it to Oahu this year? No worries! Our online Woodwinds clinic will be taught by Erik Behr!
Become a True Musician
Pacific Music Institute is no ordinary band camp! In addition to learning an instrument, our curriculum is focused on developing other crucial skills to help take you from music student to musician!
We’ll have classes in performance anxiety management, improvisation, and how to build a social media presence as a budding musician, all taught by an incredible lineup of instructors. These classes will be held online over Zoom, in hopes that students from all over the world who may not be able to travel this year will be able to experience PMI+.
The best part? This series of Zoom masterclasses will be free to attend for students in our Wind, Brass, and Percussion Clinics, and all of our other in-person summer programs!
Learn and experience the culture of Hawaii!
Getting to know the culture of our islands is an important part of the Pacific Music Institute experience. We’ve made sure that whether you choose our online or in-person programs, you get a taste of Hawaii.
In PMI+, we will have a course called “Mele: The Musical Legacy of Hawai’i.” Participants will learn of the origins of music in Hawaii before western contact, all the way through our current global music climate. PMI+ also includes a “Jam with Jake” Zoom session with our Ukulele Workshop instructor, Jake Shimabukuro.
In addition to these learning opportunities, PMI+ students will also participate in online rehearsals for a newly commissioned work based on Hawaiian themes!
