At Pacific Music Institute (PMI), we believe in nurturing not just musicians, but future leaders in the arts and beyond. Our summer music intensive serves as an educational bridge between a middle and high school musical experience and collegiate-level study, offering students a comprehensive glimpse into life in college while developing essential skills that translate across all career paths.
Building Life Skills Through Music
A student’s transition to college requires many skills beyond musical proficiency. At PMI, students develop crucial life skills that set them up for success in any college environment. In just one week, students learn:
Time Management
Balancing multiple rehearsals, practice sessions, and workshops mirrors the demanding schedule of college life. Students learn to prioritize tasks, manage their energy, and maintain peak performance under pressure.
Communication
Working with a variety of faculty members throughout the week of PMI encourages students to communicate effectively, seek feedback, and take ownership of their artistic development—skills that are essential for thriving in college.
Independence and Accountability
Students are responsible for their own practice schedules, preparation, and punctuality. This level of autonomy prepares them for the self-directed nature of college and beyond.
Collaborative Skills
Chamber music and large ensemble experiences teach students how to work effectively in teams, navigate group dynamics, and contribute meaningfully to collective goals—capabilities that are valuable in any college major or career path.
Social and Emotional Growth
The intensive nature of PMI also fosters significant personal growth. Students develop resilience through the challenge of learning a broad and large range of repertoire very quickly. They build confidence by performing in front of peers and receiving constructive feedback. Most importantly, they form lasting friendships with fellow musicians who share their passion and ambitions. These social and emotional skills are invaluable for navigating the transitions and challenges of college life.
A Conservatory Experience
While PMI prepares students for college or career success no matter what discipline they choose to pursue, many of our students wonder what it would be like to become a professional musician. Our week-long intensive, mimicking the experience of a musical conservatory, can help students picture what life would be like if they chose to major in music in college.
As PMI violin faculty member Clara Kim notes, “Being a professional musician requires a lot of different types of skills.” The intensive nature of our summer program deliberately mirrors the conservatory experience, challenging students to develop a variety of competencies in a condensed timeframe. From mastering interpersonal skills to adapting their instrumental technique across different ensemble settings, students experience the multifaceted nature of professional musicianship.
“PMI really does mimic that feeling of having all of these different types of ways that we can express ourselves on our instruments and be a community with each other,” Ms. Kim explains. “It does really encapsulate in a very short amount of time what it might be like to pursue music and to attend, for example, a conservatory.”
Expanding Horizons
At PMI, we see many students who wish to become professional musicians as well as students who desire careers in the arts without becoming professional performers. While performance is often the most visible aspect of a music career, PMI introduces students to the vast array of opportunities within the arts sector. From arts administration to music education, we help students explore how their musical training can open doors to diverse career paths, which can help students find direction before entering college.
Beyond the Practice Room: Comprehensive Career Preparation
Understanding that the path to college extends beyond perfecting repertoire, PMI is excited to announce a new workshop this summer: “B# = C Success: College & Career Pathways for Young Musicians.” This workshop is included for PMI 2025 students, and is part of HYS’ series of workshops generously supported by the Hawaiʻi Community Foundation. This initiative connects aspiring musicians with professional performers, recording artists, and arts administrators who can provide real-world insights into diverse career paths in music.
The workshops feature:
- Live performances by professional musicians
- Interactive Q&A sessions with performers about their career journeys
- Essential information about FAFSA and scholarship opportunities
- Networking opportunities with fellow young musicians
- Free food!
While PMI seminars are for registered students, Hawaiʻi Youth Symphony is also offering FREE workshops open to the public. On Saturday, July 5, 2025 we will offer a 60-minute session open to all parents and guardians interested in more information about FAFSA and scholarship opportunities (no need to have a registered PMI student!). We encourage you to join our mailing list for more information about B# = C Success and Pacific Music Institute.
Making Higher Education Accessible
We recognize that pursuing higher education requires preparation. Our B# = C Success FAFSA workshop addresses one of the most crucial aspects of college preparation: financial planning. By educating students and parents about available financial aid opportunities, we aim to make higher education more accessible to aspiring young musicians.
The college application process for conservatories and music programs differs significantly from traditional academic programs. Our workshops provide invaluable insights from musicians who have successfully navigated this unique pathway, offering practical advice on auditions, applications, and program selection. It also helps to support non-music majors in drawing upon their musical experiences when applying for scholarships, internships, and other opportunities.
