CHRISTOPHER SMITH

Conductor, Wind Ensemble

Christopher Smith is the band director at Kapolei Middle School, where he has taught for nine years. At Kapolei Middle, Mr. Smith frequently serves as a mentor teacher to University of Hawaiʻi teacher candidates and most recently established a partnership with Chamber Music Hawaiʻi, bringing performances and masterclass opportunities to Kapolei students. He additionally conducts adult and student ensembles throughout Oʻahu, and has appeared with the Hawaiʻi Symphonic Band, U.S. Pacific Fleet Band, Honolulu Wind Ensemble, University of Hawaiʻi West Oʻahu Band, University of Hawaiʻi Summer Band, and the OBDA Honor Bands. He is regularly sought out as a guest clinician for local middle and high schools.

Mr. Smith is a graduate of the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, where he earned his Bachelor of Music and Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Secondary Education. While at UH Mānoa, he toured with the UH Wind Ensemble, performed as winner of the Concerto Competition with the UH Symphony Orchestra, and studied conducting with Dr. Jeffrey Boeckman. He previously completed coursework at the University of Texas at Austin, where he performed with the UT Wind Ensemble under the direction of Jerry Junkin. Mr. Smith is a member of the Oʻahu Band Directors Association.
