Countdown to PMI2021


Daily Check-In

  1. If you are able, attend PMI+ from 9:30-11:00AM on Zoom
  2. Complete screening questions through Wellness Tracker. A link will be sent via text message at 10:3AM every morning.
  3. When you arrive to the Hawaii Convention Center, you will need to go through one of the temperature screening check points.
  4. Proceed up to the third floor(Pa Kalihi Courtyard) and you will see big HYS signs and a check-in table. Arrive 15 minutes before your start time. 
  5. Check in with HYS staff at the check-in desk and get a wristband.
  6. Remember your instrument, instrument-specific supplies (rosin, reeds, mouthpiece) music, folder, and pencil.

Daily Check-Out

  1. YOU MUST CHECK OUT at the check out table.
  2. Make sure you gather all of your belongings before leaving.
  3. After your session is done, please exit the Convention Center right away and avoid gathering.
  4. If getting picked up, please be ON time. PMI will not be responsible for supervising students after their check-out time. In case of unforeseen circumstances, students should wait on the third floor to be picked up.
  5. Parents may also park in the garage (30 minute grace period) and meet their child at the check-in/out desk/ For health and safety reasons, parents are not permitted into rehearsal areas.

Daily Room Schedule

Where: Hawaii Convention Center

Follow this daily schedule from Monday, July 5 to Saturday, July 10. 

Concert will be on Sunday, July 11.

Concert Performance (Sunday)

When: Sunday, July 11th, 2021

Where: Hawaii Convention Center

Live audience performances will be in 30-minute time slots. Every student can invite 2 household guests. Event will be recorded but not livestreamed. No classes on Sunday on July 11th.


10:00-12:30PM: Solo & String Quartet and String Orchestra

1:00-3:00PM: Wind, Brass, & Percussion

4:00-5:00PM: Summer Jazz Intensive

Concert Attire for SSQ:

Option#1: Bright solid color (e.g., jewel tones) “summery” dress, floor-length, knee-length or in between. Alternatively, solid color blouse with black or coordinating skirt/dress pants. Black shoes/sandals.

Option#2: Solid color dress shirt, black or coordinating trousers. Black shoes.

Concert Attire for WBP and SJI:

All: Aloha attire on the top with long black pants. Black shoes.

Safety Protocols

Every student will receive a text in the morning from Wellness Tracker to answer a series of health questions.

Before entering the Hawaii Convention Center, students will have to pass through a temperature screening checkpoint.

All students and faculty are required to wear face masks. All eligible individuals are encouraged to be vaccinated.

All woodwind and brass  students should minimize their spread of aerosols by using bell covers and overlapping masks.

Flute students should wear face shields and will be provided with a plastic aerosol guard that attaches to the headjoint.

Extra masks may be picked up at the check-in table.


No, you are not required to attend. We do highly encourage everyone attend these sessions. We have excellent mainland clinicians that will engage with you in important music life skills! Take advantage of this amazing opportunity.

All non-wind players (string, rhythm section, percussion) may use regular face masks.

Wind players should supply their own overlapping style mask and bell cover.

If you forget your mask, you can grab a mask from the check-in desk and cut a slit in it.

If you’re in Solo & String Quartet (SSQ), Iggy Jang will assign you to be a part of one string quartet. Some students may be selected to also play in the Select String Orchestra. Students may also take private lessons with instructors.

If you’re in Wind, Brass, and Percussion (WBP), look for your instrument specific block in the daily room schedule. Some students may be selected to also play in the woodwind ensemble and brass ensemble.

If you’re in Summer Jazz Intensive, you will belong in the jazz block in the daily room schedule.

Daily Attire: Dress code would be long pants/conservative shorts and blouse or t-shirt. No tank tops or other sleeveless clothing. Same would apply to PMI+.

Zoom Expectations

Please sign on at 9:20am HST (10 minutes before 9:30). PMI staff will verify your name and email address before admitting you into Zoom. Zoom profile name must be set to registered student’s first and last name ahead of time. PMI may not admit names that do not match our registered list.

Equipment needed:
1. Computer, laptop, or tablet
2. Dependable internet and wifi connection
3. It is recommended to download the Zoom Video Communications Application (free). Please keep
4. Zoom Application updated with the most recent updates. Those unable to download the Zoom App can join from browser.
6. Headphones or ear buds to limit ambient noise (recommended)

Zoom Behavior
1. No live streaming/recording sessions
2. No sharing zoom meeting ID/password
3. Students should be dressed as if attending an in-person rehearsal.

All students should actively participate in the sessions. Non-participation includes multi-tasking, doing homework, eating, reading, fooling around, playing video games, texting, reading, sleeping, laying down, use of social media platforms, livestreaming, video/audio recording, etc. These types of behaviors will not be tolerated and will be strictly monitored, which may result in a warning, contacting of parents, or expulsion if the behavior continues. HYS reserves the right to remove students from class. Repeated failure to comply will result in expulsion from PMI+ and future participation in HYS.

Code of Conduct

We expect attendees of the Pacific Music Institute (PMI) to behave in a manner that respects the rights of others and brings honor to the Institute and dignity to themselves. We are guests at the Hawaii Convention Center. Please leave any area in a condition cleaner and more orderly than you found it.  Please adhere to the following rules:

  • Attendance at all functions is mandatory, including concerts. The PMI General Manager must be notified with a parent note or email of any known absences, tardies, or requests for early departure. Inadequate attendance or notice of absence at sessions may result in disciplinary action including exclusion from performances.
  • Treat all faculty, staff, and volunteers with respect.
  • No food, drinks (except water), or gum are allowed in any of the rehearsal/concert facilities.
  • No use of tobacco products, e-cigarettes/vapes, or other intoxicating substances.
  • No gambling or stealing.
  • No bullying, harassment, or hazing.
  • No selling, promotion of, possessing, consuming, or being under the influence of drugs, narcotics, hallucinogens, or alcohol.
  • No socializing with outside guests during workshop hours.
  • No texting, phone or video calls, or use of any electronic devices during rehearsals and concerts.

In any case of misconduct, Hawaii Youth Symphony will enforce immediate disciplinary action, which may include expulsion from PMI and forfeiture of all fees. The Hawaii Youth Symphony will cooperate fully with law enforcement officials for any and all legal transgressions.

Students may park in the Convention Center parking garage for $12 per entry. (This is not an in and out pass. If you leave the Convention Center and decide to come back, it will be another $12). There is a 30 minute grace period.
